Robofest Summer Camp 2002
Saturday, August 17
Lawrence Tech University, Science Building, S321
The registration closed on Thu. Aug. 8th, 2002
Robotics is a wonderful motivator in science and engineering education.
In order to maximize student's learning, Lawrence Tech University, Computer
Science Department / Robotics lab is pleased to announce Robofest Summer Camp 2002,
which is a one day contest, in which the problem will be given on the day of
competition in the morning after a brief workshop.
There will be three divisions in the contest: (1) RCX code, (2) RoboLab, and
(3) Advanced Programming (NQC or Java) division.
No adult help allowed and the students must create code
on site. The challenge will be a small enough task that should be completed in
a short time frame of one day. During the award ceremony, the winner of each
division must present the team's solution to the participants by showing and
explaining the source code on a projection screen. Another unique feature of
this camp is that the winner allows the solution to be available only to
participants after the event, which will emphasize learning from each other.
- Registration:
- Only 35 teams can register on a first come, first served basis.
- Must be registered by an adult coach who has an official email
address by sending an email to
robofest@yahoo.com with the following information:
- Coach name, email address, phone number, and mail address
- For each team: a division name to enter, student names up to two
and their grades. (We strongly believe one or two is the best team size
for one robot in order to maximize the learning experience. One team
can enter only one division.)
- Lunch options: (1) LTU cafeteria or (2) Bring a brown bag
(University Cafeteria will be open for lunch,
if there are more than 50 people who want to buy lunch at the University.)
- The coach is responsible for transportation and overseeing the
team members.
- Then the organizer will send a confirmation email to the coach with a
confirmation code. Bring the copy of this email on the day of the camp.
(We are going to setup a database enabled website later for this camp.
The code can be used to logon to the system)
- Eligibility to register
- 5th grade - 12 grade students
- Each team must bring a computer (laptop preferred) with the software as
well as a standard Lego robot kit (Lego Mindstorms) with batteries.
Extra motors and sensors may be used. If you have a rotation sensor,
please bring it, too. It is highly suggested that each
team bring a preconstructed basic driving base, for example Roverbot,
before coming to the contest.
- Please note that this contest is like an exam or a programming contest.
Each team must have prior experience and knowledge in programming Lego
robots and should be ready to accept the challenge on the day of
competition. During the workshop, some essential tips will be covered.
(We do not teach basics of each programming language.)
