Computer Science Robotics Lab had laptop robot demonstrations during the Dean's Brunch on Feb. 28 in the atrium from early in the morning. Students who helped the event were (from left): Jason Lo (with an AIBO robot), Vincent Chen, Shan Tseng, Andrey Chernolutskiy, Michael Nasers, Mohammad Jallad, and Maurice Tedder. Also Robofest DVD and IGVC 2003 DVD were presented. College of Arts Sciences awarded a gift card for everyone as a small token of appreciation. |

Gloria taught in Mathematics in the College of Arts & Sciences since 1968 when she was first hired as a part-time lecturer. In 1997 Gloria was appointed Director of the Developmental Mathematics Program in acknowledgement of her twenty-five years of devoted service in Basic Studies and retention programs at LTU.
The Department of Mathematics & Computer Science is currently
accepting donations to be given to the American Cancer Society as a
Memorial Fund for Gloria. Any donations or questions can be directed
to the Math & Computer Science Dept. at xt. 3560.

It is with the deepest sadness that I report that Prof. Gloria Rivkin has passed away.
I only knew her for a little less than five years, but I will miss her heart of gold and
her strong desire to improve the world in which we live and work. I can only imagine
how those of you have known her for so many years must feel.
David Bindschadler, Chair of the MCS Dept.

Congratulations to all of the winners and contestants in the first Lawrence
Tech Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) programming contest. The
contest was held on Feb. 3, 2004 in S302. The winners are [Left to right]
Michael A. Haber (3rd Place, $50 gift certificate, CS major), Steven E.
Kryskalla (1st Place, $175, Math/CS major), Eric D. Colvin (2nd Place, $75,
BSIT major),
Maurice Tedder (ACM chair), Jesse Brindle (ACM vice-chair). We also served
Subway sandwiches to help fuel the brains of our 10 contestants who worked
very hard trying to solve our challenging contest problem prepared by Dr.
Chung (ACM advisor). The contest problem called "interval challenges", which
was to find (1) the length of the smallest enclosing interval that contains
all the given intervals (2) the number of gaps and (3) the total length of
the gaps. In addition to our contest participants, ACM faculty adviser Dr.
Chan-Jin Chung and ACM Chair and
Co-Chair Maurice Tedder and Jesse Brindle were the proctors for the contest.
The ACM thanks the LTU Student Government for providing prizes and the Math
and Computer Science Department for sponsoring the food for all
participants.
The next ACM chapter contest is scheduled for 04-05 academic year. Until
then, we are ready
to represent LTU in the TopCoder collegiate challenge contest in which we
compete against other university students from around the world for a
$100,000 prize purse. The competition starts February 23, 2004 but register
as a TopCoder member now (it's free) to gain access to the practice
problems. The topcoder link is: www.topcoder.com
