Fall 2004
4th Annual OCCRA Women's Robotics Tournament
On December 4, 2004, Lawrence Technological University hosted the 4th annual Women's Robotics Tournament organized by the Oakland County Competitive Robotics Association (OCCRA). OCCRA is an association of Oakland County high school robotics teams that have joined together to form a league. In this competition, these 110-pound robots, which are entirely student-designed and built, face off against one another in order to achieve specific assigned objectives. LTU has been hosting this event since 2001 in an effort to motivate young women to pursue technical and engineering careers.
President Chambers gave the initial opening remarks, wishing the contestants luck and acknowledging participating individuals representing LTU. He then introduced Dr. Maria Vaz, Associate Provost, Dean of Graduate Programs, and Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, who encouraged high school women to consider careers in the areas of sciences and engineering. LTU faculty who served as competition judges were Dr. Lisa Anneberg, Dr. Patricia Shamamy, Prof. Ruth Favro and Dr. Marilyn Rands. A number of LTU students also served in the same capacity and included Clarice Westman, Mariana Birlan, Kaori Sakai, and Andrew Erridge. Before the award ceremony, students from Dr. Chung's Intelligent Systems class participated in a laptop robot race, while Ms. Vasudha Deepak, a student in the class, explained the laptop robot project to the audience. Dr. Chambers presided over the closing ceremony, congratulating all participants on such a successful and high-spirited tournament.
