  • Robotics Lab Open House Report by ChanJin Chung

During the dedication week of the UTLC building, the Robotics lab Open House had more than 200 visitors as listed below.
    - Mon. Lessenger Middle School: 35 students and a teacher (I am pleased to note that this was the first group invited to the  new building officially)
    - Tue. Longfellow Middle School: 35 students and a teacher
    - Wed. Carleton middle school: 30 students and two teachers
    - Fri. 8:00am session: 5, 11:30am session, 10, 4:30pm: 25 6:00pm session: 25 (Earhart middle school with two teachers)
    - Saturday from 7:40pm: around 35

Many interesting robots were introduced, such as the first Lego robot that is counting number of visitors in the room, controlling blinds and cutting ribbons (Not remote controlled). A real robot lawn mower developed by Friendlyrobotics.com was
    demonstrated on Friday and Saturday.

Without the space, we could not do anything. First of all, I would like to thank Mr. Steve Ragan and Mr. Walter Bizon who allowed us use of the TV production studio for the demo. Many thanks for the support Dr. Walker gave for this event. Special thanks to Dr. Rodgers and Dr. Bindschadler who sponsored this event. How could I forget the Friday morning 11:30 am session when
Dr. & Mrs. Chambers attended the whole 1.5-hour presentation! We should appreciate Dr. Marburger and Dr. Rodgers, who gave
welcome remarks to school students. Campus facilities did an excellent job as always providing tables and chairs as well as moving heavy things. Campus Security was busying opening and locking the doors of the new building day and night.

I should not forget the help from my students: Andrey Shvartsman and David Schamulak (Physics/Comp. Sci. major), and Aleksandra Myasnikova (Masters of Computer Science) assisted the event from the beginning till the end for the demonstration. Freo Chien also helped the setup and developed Lego camera software. Thank you everyone to be a part to show that robotics is a wonderful motivator in many areas of education. Please check out photo gallery. Thank you.
